A new international project exploring the historical relationship between Mongolia and the United States through the lives and legacy of Diluv Khutughtu Jamsranjav and renowned American Mongolist Owen Lattimore will officially launch in Ulaanbaatar on May 12.
The project, titled “Khutughtu and Lattimore: Legacy Beyond Borders,” is being organized by the Diluv Khutughtu Foundation in cooperation with the American Center for Mongolian Studies. It aims to deepen public understanding of the early cultural, educational, religious and diplomatic connections between Mongolia and the United States while supporting further research on the Fifth Diluv Khutughtu Jamsranjav.
As part of the initiative, an international exhibition will open at the National Museum of Mongolia and run through June 12. The exhibition will feature rare photographs donated by Owen Lattimore’s family, archival materials from the National Library of Mongolia, and copies of letters, manuscripts and historical documents preserved at institutions including the Library of Congress, Harvard University, Yale University, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Pennsylvania. Organizers said the exhibition will be open to the public free of charge.
An international symposium will also be held on May 12-13, bringing together scholars and researchers from Mongolia, the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan. Participants include academics from Cambridge University, the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard University and the Library of Congress, as well as representatives of Mongolian research institutions and local authorities from Zavkhan aimag.
In addition, outreach events will be organized in Zavkhan aimag, the birthplace of Diluv Khutughtu Jamsranjav, from May 14-18. International scholars participating in the project are expected to hold lectures, discussions and educational programs for local communities while presenting a mobile version of the exhibition.
The project comes ahead of the upcoming 250th anniversary of U.S. independence and the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and the United States. Organizers said the exhibition is expected to become part of the official commemorative events marking the anniversaries.
