Reporters Without Borders has released its 2026 World Press Freedom Index, warning that global media freedom has reached its lowest level in 25 years.
According to the report, the situation for journalists is now classified as “difficult” or “very serious” in the majority of countries. RSF highlighted growing political pressure, economic fragility of media outlets, and the spread of disinformation as key factors undermining press freedom worldwide.
Mongolia ranked 85th in the 2026 index, marking an improvement compared to previous years and placing the country in the mid-range globally.
RSF noted that while Mongolia maintains a relatively pluralistic media environment, challenges remain, particularly related to economic pressures on independent media, political influence, and issues surrounding journalist safety and professional standards.
Observers say the improvement reflects gradual progress in strengthening media freedom, but emphasize that structural issues—such as media ownership concentration and financial sustainability—continue to pose risks.
Nordic countries once again dominate the top rankings, with nations such as Norway, Denmark and Sweden maintaining strong protections for independent journalism. Meanwhile, conditions remain among the worst in countries like Eritrea, North Korea and Afghanistan.
The 2026 report underscores a widening gap between countries with strong media protections and those where press freedom is rapidly deteriorating.
Across Asia, the situation remains mixed, with some countries showing resilience while others face increasing restrictions. The report also points to the growing impact of digital platforms, where misinformation and algorithm-driven content distribution are reshaping the media landscape.
RSF stressed that ensuring economic independence of media organizations has become one of the most urgent challenges globally, as financial vulnerability increasingly translates into editorial pressure.
The organization called on governments to strengthen legal protections for journalists, improve transparency, and support sustainable media ecosystems to safeguard press freedom in the years ahead.
