Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh has concluded his state visit to Kazakhstan, marking a significant step in deepening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation across a wide range of sectors.
During the visit, President Khurelsukh held official talks with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, focusing on strengthening the “strategic partnership” with greater emphasis on trade and economic cooperation, as well as coordination at regional and international levels. The two sides agreed to expand mutually beneficial collaboration and implement major joint projects as symbols of their growing partnership.
A total of 18 agreements and memoranda of understanding were signed, covering sectors including trade, finance, energy, urban development, science, health, media, and local governance. The parties also agreed to develop a joint roadmap to implement an interim free trade agreement between Mongolia and the Eurasian Economic Union, aiming to boost trade turnover and market access.
Connectivity and transport cooperation were key priorities, with plans to launch direct flights between Ulaanbaatar and Astana starting in June, resume flights between Bayan-Ölgii and Öskemen, and establish a joint working group to improve logistics routes and remove transport bottlenecks. Kazakhstan also plans to open a consulate in Bayan-Ölgii.
The two countries will expand cooperation in information technology, mining, healthcare, sports, and education, including support for Mongolian students studying in Kazakhstan and proposals to open a branch campus of a Kazakh university in Mongolia. Cultural and academic collaboration will also be strengthened through joint research on historical heritage and continued participation in cultural festivals.
Economic ties were further advanced during the Kazakhstan–Mongolia Business Forum in Astana, jointly organized by Kazakhstan’s “Atameken” National Chamber and the Mongolian National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which brought together more than 250 public and private sector representatives. Agreements worth over $20 million were concluded, with both sides aiming to increase trade and investment, particularly in agriculture, textiles, construction, logistics, and finance.
The visit also featured cultural diplomacy events, including the first-ever “Beautiful Mongolia” concert by Mongolian artists in Astana, as well as exhibitions showcasing Mongolian photography and traditional music.
Leaders reaffirmed their commitment to cooperate on global initiatives, including environmental protection, desertification, and international development, while supporting each other within the United Nations and other international organizations. The reciprocal visits of the two heads of state within a short period underscore a shared commitment to strengthening long-term partnership and expanding cooperation.
