The 179th session of the Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is currently underway in Geneva, Switzerland, running from February 2 to 18, 2026. The session brings together parliamentarians and experts from around the world to review cases involving threats and violations against elected lawmakers.
During the session, Mongolian Member of Parliament O.Nominchimeg was elected President of the IPU Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians. The committee is composed of 10 members, selected on the basis of their professional experience and expertise in human rights, parliamentary law, and international cooperation.
The Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians plays a central role in addressing violations against lawmakers worldwide. Each year, parliamentarians in many countries are subjected to harassment, intimidation, arbitrary detention, ill-treatment, undue political pressure, and, in the most serious cases, assassination. In response, the committee mobilizes the international parliamentary community, engages in dialogue with national authorities, and seeks remedies aimed at preventing further violations and ensuring accountability.
As of the current session, the committee is examining 886 active cases globally, according to Mongolia’s State Great Khural Press and Public Relations Department. These cases span multiple regions and political systems, underscoring the continued vulnerability of parliamentarians and the importance of international oversight mechanisms.
Ms. Odsuren’s election as President places a Mongolian lawmaker at the forefront of one of the IPU’s most sensitive and influential bodies. Observers note that the role involves not only chairing committee deliberations but also representing the committee in high-level engagements with governments, international organizations, and human rights institutions.
Her appointment reflects Mongolia’s increasing engagement in parliamentary diplomacy and multilateral human rights cooperation, while also highlighting the country’s commitment to strengthening international mechanisms that protect democratic institutions and elected representatives.
