An Unabandoned Case: The S. Zorig Assassination is a comprehensive documentary volume that brings together nearly three decades of journalism surrounding one of the most unresolved and consequential cases in Mongolia’s democratic history.
The assassination of Member of Parliament and Acting Minister of Infrastructure S. Zorig in 1998 remains officially unsolved. Since the day of the killing, the case has continued to raise questions about justice, accountability, and the role of the media in preserving historical truth. For 27 years, the national daily Zuunii Medee has continuously reported on the case—publishing news articles, interviews, investigations, analytical commentaries, and documentary materials without interruption.
This book compiles that extensive body of work into a single 764-page volume, covering the period from 1998 to 2025. Rather than revisiting the case through hindsight or speculation, the book preserves how the story unfolded in real time—as documented on the pages of a daily newspaper. In doing so, it serves both as an archival record for research and reference, and as an accessible narrative for general readers interested in Mongolia’s political and media history.
The publication reflects Zuunii Medee’s long-standing editorial principle that a free press functions as society’s collective memory. It demonstrates how journalism responded to a prolonged democratic challenge, how public expectations were articulated through reporting, and how the media continued to ask questions when answers remained elusive.
More than a collection of articles, An Unabandoned Case offers a documentary history of the relationship between journalism, public memory, and unresolved justice. It underscores the idea that when a case remains unsolved, history itself remains incomplete—and that forgetting poses its own risks.
The book is currently available nationwide through major bookstores including “Az Khur” bookstore, “Internom” bookstore, and AlphaBook, as well as directly from Zuunii Medee. For readers who prefer digital formats, the book is also available on esan.mn.
By bringing together verified reporting across 27 years, this volume provides future generations with a reliable source for understanding not only the S. Zorig case itself, but also how Mongolia’s press engaged with one of the most enduring questions of its democratic era.
