The United States Department of State has announced a temporary pause on issuing immigrant visas for nationals of certain countries, including Mongolia, as part of a policy review initiated under the administration of Donald Trump.

According to the notice, the review focuses on ensuring that immigrants entering the United States are financially self-sufficient and do not rely on public welfare programs. Effective January 21, 2026, immigrant visas will not be issued to applicants from the affected countries during the pause.

The Department of State clarified that applicants may still submit immigrant visa applications and attend scheduled interview appointments, and embassies will continue to schedule interviews. However, no immigrant visas will be issued until further notice.

An exception applies to dual nationals who apply using a valid passport from a country not included in the affected list. The Department also confirmed that no previously issued immigrant visas have been revoked as part of this guidance. Questions related to entry into the United States fall under the authority of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The pause does not apply to tourist visas, which are classified as nonimmigrant visas.

The Department of State noted that the measure is temporary and that additional guidance may be released following the completion of the policy review.
