A ceremony to present the 2025 Foreign Minister’s Commendation of Japan to opera singer Yumi Okuyama was held on Tuesday at the Embassy of Japan in Mongolia.
Since 1999, soprano Yumi Okuyama has performed extensively on Mongolian stages, serving as a cultural bridge by introducing Japanese music to Mongolia and Mongolian music to Japan.
Since 2011, she has also worked as a vocal instructor, teaching Japanese compositions to her Mongolian students and promoting musical education and cultural exchange. In addition, Okuyama has conducted choirs of Japanese residents in Mongolia and performed at numerous bilateral events — including diplomatic anniversaries and the Emperor’s Birthday reception — contributing significantly to the development of mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and Mongolia through music.
